Your First Fortnite Matches

This short guide is made for absolute beginners. If you just installed Fortnite and feel overwhelmed by all the menus, modes and buttons, start here.

It is August 2026. Chapter 7 Season 4 is Override. You do not need consoles, Sprites, or Green Hill on night one. You need a mode and a gun. Full version: complete beginner guide. Season: Override.

1. Choose the Right Mode

For your first games, we recommend:

  • Zero Build: No building, you can focus on aiming and movement.
  • Reload later the same week if you want more fights per hour.
  • Battle Royale (Build) later, when you feel comfortable.

In the main menu:

  1. Click Play.
  2. Select Zero Build Battle Royale.
  3. Make sure Fill is on, so you get teammates.

2. Basic Settings for Beginners

Before you queue, quickly adjust these settings:

  • Sensitivity: Start with a medium value so you can aim precisely.
  • Toggle Sprint: Turn on auto sprint so you don’t have to hold a key.
  • Visualized Sound Effects: Turn this on to see enemy footsteps and shots on your screen.

You’ll find all of this under Settings → Controller / Keyboard & Mouse → Audio.

3. Your First Drop

When the Battle Bus starts:

  • Wait 3–5 seconds before jumping.
  • Aim for a quiet area on the edge of the map.
  • Avoid very popular POIs in your first few games.

Land on a roof or next to a chest, pick up a weapon immediately, then start looting the building.

4. Simple Combat Rules

Follow these simple rules in every fight:

  • Always aim down sights (right mouse / left trigger) for medium range.
  • Keep at least one shotgun and one assault rifle in your loadout.
  • Don’t loot in the open – always behind cover.
  • If you are low HP, retreat, heal, then re‑engage.

5. What to Practice in the First 10 Games

For your first matches, focus only on:

  1. Movement – sprinting, sliding, jumping.
  2. Weapon swapping – quickly switching between shotgun and AR.
  3. Listening for audio cues – footsteps, chests, shots.

Don’t worry about building or advanced mechanics yet. Surviving longer and taking a few good fights is already a win.

6. Next Steps

Once you feel safe in your first fights, continue with:

  • The full Complete Beginner’s Guide for more depth.
  • Our guides about settings, weapons, and strategy.

Little progress every match is all you need – Fortnite has a steep learning curve, but with the right basics you’ll reach your first Victory Royale much faster.
