Fortnite Editing Guide: Speed Up Your Edits
Editing is what separates good Fortnite players from great ones. Fast, clean edits create opportunities that your opponent can’t react to. This guide covers every edit pattern and how to train them.
Why Editing Matters
- Creates shooting angles: Edit a window, take a shot, reset
- Movement through builds: Navigate your own structures quickly
- Fakes and mindgames: Start an edit to bait a reaction
- Piece control: Trap opponents by editing around them
- Speed advantage: Faster edits = less time exposed
Essential Edit Patterns
Wall Edits
Top Triangle (Right)
- Tiles: Top-left + Top-right + Bottom-right
- Use: Most common peek edit, right-hand advantage
Top Triangle (Left)
- Tiles: Top-left + Top-right + Bottom-left
- Use: Left-side peek (less common, situational)
Window (Center)
- Tiles: Top-right + Bottom-right (or top-left + bottom-left)
- Use: Quick peek from center, easy to hit
Door
- Tiles: Bottom-left + Bottom-right
- Use: Movement through walls, less combat use
Top Half
- Tiles: Top-left + Top-right
- Use: See over wall while staying protected below
Floor Edits
Single Tile Open
- Remove one quadrant
- Use: Drop through floors, peek downward
Half Floor
- Remove two adjacent quadrants
- Use: Wider opening for dropping or shooting
Ramp Edits
Half Ramp
- Select two tiles on one side
- Use: Peek from the side of a ramp
Rotation Edit
- Select tiles to rotate ramp direction
- Use: Change ramp facing quickly
Cone (Pyramid) Edits
Front Wedge
- Edit front two tiles
- Use: Creates a ramp-like angle from a cone
Single Corner
- Edit one tile
- Use: Creates a small peek hole
Side Edit
- Edit two tiles on one side
- Use: Walk through a cone sideways
Optimal Edit Keybinds
Mouse & Keyboard
- Edit key: ‘F’ or ‘E’ (must be fast to reach)
- Confirm edit: Release edit key (Edit on Release is MANDATORY)
- Reset edit: Right mouse button (with Edit on Release)
- Select edit: Left mouse button
Edit on Release: Turn this ON. It removes the need for a separate confirm key and makes edits significantly faster.
Controller
- Edit button: Left stick click (L3) or a paddle
- Confirm: Same as edit button (with Edit on Release)
- Reset: Right trigger or dedicated button
- Custom binds: Highly recommended over default
Speed Training Method
Phase 1: Learn the Patterns (Week 1)
Focus on accuracy, not speed:
- Practice each wall edit 50 times
- Practice each floor edit 30 times
- Practice each cone edit 30 times
- Reset between each edit
Phase 2: Build Speed (Week 2-3)
Increase pace while maintaining accuracy:
- Use edit courses (listed below)
- Time your runs, try to beat personal bests
- Practice edit-to-shoot combos
- Add movement between edits
Phase 3: Combat Application (Week 4+)
Apply edits in fights:
- Box fight practice (1v1)
- Focus on edit-shoot-reset
- Practice double/triple edits in sequence
- Start using fakes and mindgames

Advanced Edit Techniques
Double/Triple Edits
Editing multiple pieces in rapid succession:
- Edit wall (window) + floor (open) in one fluid motion
- Edit wall + floor + ramp to drop through
- Requires Edit on Release and fast mouse movement
Edit Fakes
Start an edit but don’t confirm:
- Hold edit on an opponent’s wall
- They may panic and move/shoot
- Release without confirming
- Edit again when they’ve committed to a reaction
Pre-Edits
Edit a building piece BEFORE placing it:
- Useful for placing pre-edited cones as ramps
- Can create unexpected angles
- Warning: Pre-edits stay active until you reset them, which can mess up your builds
The Peanut Butter Edit
A legendary advanced technique:
- Edit wall into a window
- Shoot through window
- Edit the SAME wall into a different shape
- Shoot again from new angle
- Reset
- All in under 1 second
Common Editing Mistakes
- Not using Edit on Release: This alone can double your edit speed
- Editing too wide: Smaller edits expose you less
- Forgetting to reset: Always reset after every play
- Panic editing: Stay calm, a clean edit beats a fast but missed one
- Ignoring floor/cone edits: Wall edits alone won’t carry you - master all pieces
- Not warming up: 5-10 minutes of edit practice before playing makes a huge difference
Daily Edit Warm-Up Routine (15 min)
- Free edit practice (3 min): All wall edits on a single wall, reset each time
- Floor + cone edits (3 min): Practice all patterns
- Edit course (5 min): Run Raider’s or your preferred course
- Edit-shoot-reset (4 min): Place wall, edit, shoot target, reset, repeat
