Fortnite Team Guide: Communication & Squad Strategies

Solo skills matter, but Fortnite team modes require a completely different approach. This guide covers everything you need to dominate in Duos, Trios, and Squads.

Communication Fundamentals

The Callout System

Effective callouts are short, clear, and actionable:

Location callouts:

  • Use compass bearings: “Enemy at 180” (south)
  • Reference landmarks: “On the hill by Pleasant”
  • Relative position: “Right side, behind the brick building”

Status callouts:

  • “One cracked” = Enemy has no shield
  • “One knocked” = You downed an enemy
  • “One flesh” = Enemy is very low HP
  • “Full team rotating” = All enemies are moving together
  • “He’s on me” = Enemy is targeting you specifically

Action callouts:

  • “Pushing” = I’m going aggressive
  • “Falling back” = I’m retreating
  • “Hold” = Stay in position, don’t push
  • “Trade me” = Shoot the enemy who’s focused on me
  • “Need mats/heals” = Request resources

Common Communication Mistakes

  1. Screaming when knocked: Stay calm, give info about who knocked you
  2. Vague callouts: “He’s over there” is useless. Be specific.
  3. Talking over teammates: Wait for gaps to share non-urgent info
  4. Not calling your pushes: Teammates can’t support what they don’t know about
  5. Backseat gaming: Don’t tell teammates how to fight mid-combat

Team Roles

The IGL (In-Game Leader)

  • Makes rotation decisions
  • Calls when to push or disengage
  • Manages team positioning in endgame
  • Keeps track of zone and storm timer
  • Usually the most experienced player

The Fragger

  • Takes the first shot in team fights
  • Pushes aggressively to create openings
  • Highest mechanical skill player
  • Focuses on getting eliminations
  • Plays more forward than the team

The Support

  • Follows up on the fragger’s pushes
  • Carries extra heals/utility
  • Watches flanks
  • Revives knocked teammates
  • Provides cover fire during rotations

The Anchor (Squads)

  • Plays most passively
  • Holds position and provides safe fallback point
  • Carries sniper or long-range weapons
  • Manages team’s material economy
  • Last alive in many scenarios (can clutch revives)

Coordinated Strategies

The Split Push

Against a single team:

  1. Two players push from the front
  2. One player flanks from the side
  3. Enemy can’t cover both angles
  4. The flanker cleans up distracted enemies

The Trade Kill

When a teammate is in a fight:

  1. Teammate calls out enemy position
  2. While enemy shoots your teammate, you take free shots
  3. Even if your teammate goes down, you get the elimination
  4. Immediately push for the revive

The Storm Edge Play

In Duos/Squads ranked:

  1. Position your team at the storm edge
  2. Catch rotating teams who are late to zone
  3. One player snipes, others rush the panicking enemies
  4. Free loot from desperate teams

The Box-Up and Wait

In stacked endgames:

  1. Build a 1x1 or 1x2 team box
  2. Assign each player a wall to watch
  3. Only edit for shots when safe
  4. Wait for other teams to fight and thin out
  5. Push with full team on the last remaining enemies

Landing Strategy for Teams

Split Landing

  • Each player drops to a different section of the same POI
  • Loot faster, cover more ground
  • Regroup once looted (set a meetup spot)
  • Risky if another full team lands

Stack Landing

  • Entire team lands same building/area
  • Slower loot but safer
  • Better for contested drops
  • Share loot to balance loadouts

Reviving & Team Economy

Revive Priority

  • Revive your fragger first (they need to be fighting)
  • IGL second (team needs direction)
  • Use cover while reviving (build a box around you)
  • Throw heals to the downed player so they can heal immediately

Resource Sharing

  • Share materials evenly (each player needs at least 200 of each)
  • If one player has 6 minis, give 3 to a teammate with none
  • The fragger gets priority on shotgun ammo
  • Support carries excess heals for the team

Reboot Strategy

When a teammate is eliminated:

  1. Secure the area (clear nearby enemies)
  2. Grab the reboot card
  3. Find the nearest safe reboot van
  4. One player reboots, others provide cover
  5. Drop weapons and heals for the rebooted player immediately

Team Rotation

Moving as a Unit

  • Don’t spread more than 2 buildings apart
  • Rotate in a staggered formation (not single file)
  • Lead player calls out threats
  • Rear player watches for followers
  • Use the same vehicle convoy or movement route

Zone Rotation

  • IGL decides which direction to rotate
  • Move together, never leave a player behind
  • If separated by storm, prioritize regrouping at zone edge
  • Use launch pads for full-team rotations in endgame

Common Team Mistakes

  1. Spreading too far apart: You can’t support each other
  2. Everyone pushing at once: Leave someone alive to trade/revive
  3. Not sharing loot: A team is only as strong as its weakest player
  4. Solo plays in team modes: Coordinate everything
  5. Ignoring downed teammates: A 3v4 is much harder than 4v4
  6. No designated IGL: Someone needs to make the final call on rotation
