Fortnite Rotation Guide: Master Zone Movement
Rotation - how and when you move toward the safe zone - is one of the most important skills in Fortnite. Poor rotations lead to storm damage, bad positioning, and getting caught in the open. Great rotations put you in a winning position before the fight even starts.
Understanding Storm Circles
Storm Phases
| Phase | Shrink Time | Wait Time | Damage/Tick |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 3:00 | 3:20 | 1 |
| 2nd | 2:00 | 2:00 | 1 |
| 3rd | 1:30 | 1:30 | 2 |
| 4th | 1:30 | 1:00 | 5 |
| 5th | 1:00 | 0:40 | 8 |
| 6th | 0:45 | 0:30 | 10 |
| 7th+ | 0:30 | 0:20 | 10 |
Key Timings to Remember
- First circle: You have plenty of time. Loot fully before moving.
- Second circle: Start heading to zone. Don’t delay.
- Third circle onwards: Being outside zone is increasingly punishing.
- Fifth circle+: Being in storm is basically death.
Early Game Rotation (Circles 1-2)
When to Leave Your Landing Spot
- Leave as soon as you have a solid loadout (AR + Shotgun + Heals)
- If zone is far, leave 30 seconds before the storm starts closing
- If zone is close, you can stay longer for extra loot
What to Do While Rotating
- Check the map constantly for the safest path
- Loot on the way - open chests in unlooted buildings
- Listen for footsteps and gunfire - avoid active fights
- Gather materials from trees/rocks along the path
- Upgrade weapons if you pass an upgrade bench
Choosing Your Path
Safe path: Longer route that avoids populated areas
- Pros: Less likely to be shot, more time to loot
- Cons: Takes longer, fewer materials/weapons along the way
Direct path: Straight line through the map
- Pros: Faster, more loot opportunities
- Cons: Higher chance of encountering enemies
River/water path: Follow rivers
- Pros: Fast movement speed, hard to be seen
- Cons: Limited cover when exiting water
Mid Game Rotation (Circles 3-4)
The “Edge of Zone” Strategy
One of the most effective rotation strategies:
- Get to the edge of the safe zone
- Position yourself where the storm is behind you
- No one can come from behind (storm protects your back)
- Watch for other teams rotating past you
- Pick off late rotators for free eliminations
Choosing Endgame Position
When the circle is revealed, ask yourself:
- Is there high ground in zone? Get there first.
- Are there buildings in zone? Claim them.
- Is zone pulling toward a mountain? Rotate early.
- Is zone in the open? Plan your build fight positioning.
Vehicle Rotation
When to use vehicles:
- Long-distance rotations (more than 500m to zone)
- When you need to cross open areas quickly
- To outrun the storm
When NOT to use vehicles:
- Near other players (noise gives you away)
- In late game (too much attention)
- In tight areas with lots of builds
Late Game Rotation (Circles 5+)
Tunneling
The primary late-game rotation technique for build modes:
- Place a floor above you
- Place a wall in front
- Walk forward
- Place floor above, wall in front
- Repeat
Advanced tunneling adds:
- Ramps inside for height changes
- Side walls for protection
- Pre-edits for faster placement
Tarp Running
A faster but less protected version:
- Place floors above you while sprinting
- Don’t place walls (saves materials)
- Use terrain and natural cover
- Best when few players are looking at you
Launch Pad Rotation
The best late-game rotation tool:
- Save launch pads for circles 5+
- Place them 3+ stories high for maximum distance
- Use when you need to cross open ground
- Can reach high ground from low ground instantly
Zero Build Rotation
Without building, rotation requires different strategies:
Use Terrain as Cover
- Always plan your route around hills, rocks, and buildings
- Never sprint across open fields
- Use the slope of hills to block line of sight
- Duck behind trees and rocks between sprints
Movement Items
In Zero Build, movement items are CRITICAL:
- Shockwave Grenades: Instant reposition
- Grapplers: Quick height gain
- Impulse Grenades: Emergency escape
- Dash ability (if available): Use to dodge and reposition
The Leapfrog Technique
- Identify your next piece of cover
- Sprint to it
- Stop and assess
- Identify the next piece of cover
- Repeat until in zone
Never sprint to zone without knowing where your next cover is.
Competitive Rotation
Zone Rule (Half-and-Half)
When the new circle appears:
- Imagine the new circle split in half
- The half closest to you is where most people will rotate
- The far half will have fewer players but requires faster rotation
- Choose based on your materials and health
Dead Side Rotation
In competitive games:
- Identify which side of zone has fewer players (dead side)
- Rotate to the dead side early
- You’ll face less resistance
- Save materials for endgame
Surge Management
In competitive modes with elimination thresholds:
- Take shots at rotating teams from safe positions
- Don’t overcommit to fights during rotation
- Tag enemies with AR to stay above surge threshold
- Prioritize damage over eliminations during midgame
Positioning Hierarchy
Best to worst positions in any circle:
- Natural high ground in zone center (mountain, hill)
- Building on high ground (3-4 stories)
- In a building/structure in zone
- Low ground in zone with materials
- Edge of zone with storm at your back
- Open ground in zone (bad but not fatal)
- Outside zone rotating in (worst position)
Common Rotation Mistakes
- Rotating too late: Start moving before you have to
- Taking fights while rotating: Unless you can win in 10 seconds, skip it
- No materials during rotation: Farm while moving
- Ignoring the minimap: Check zone constantly
- Running in straight lines: Move unpredictably
- Not carrying movement: Always have at least one mobility item
- Tunnel vision: Check all directions while rotating, not just forward
