Fortnite Shotgun Guide: Master Close-Range Combat

Shotguns are the most important weapons in Fortnite. Every single fight eventually comes down to close range, and your shotgun skill determines whether you win or lose those crucial moments.

Current Shotgun Meta

Available Shotguns (Chapter 6)

Pump Shotgun:

  • High damage per shot
  • Slow fire rate
  • Rewards precise aim
  • Best for: Edit plays and one-shot potential

Auto Shotgun:

  • Medium damage per shot
  • Fast fire rate
  • More forgiving on missed shots
  • Best for: Spray-heavy playstyles

Lever Action Shotgun:

  • Good damage per shot
  • Medium fire rate
  • Tighter spread
  • Best for: Balanced playstyle

Which Shotgun to Use?

  • Aggressive builders: Pump (high burst damage after edits)
  • Zero Build players: Auto Shotgun (consistent DPS)
  • All-around: Lever Action (balanced performance)

Crosshair Placement

The single most important shotgun skill is where you aim BEFORE you shoot.

Head Level

  • Always keep your crosshair at head height
  • When approaching doors, aim at head level where enemies will appear
  • When editing, pre-aim where the enemy’s head will be

Pre-Aiming

Before you see the enemy:

  1. Predict where they are (listen for footsteps)
  2. Aim at that spot
  3. Only need a small adjustment when you actually see them
  4. Fire immediately

Flick Shots vs Tracking

Flick shots (quick snap to target):

  • Better for pump shotgun
  • Requires fast, precise mouse/stick movement
  • Practice: Tile Frenzy maps in creative

Tracking (follow the target):

  • Better for auto/lever shotguns
  • Keep crosshair on target while they move
  • Practice: Moving target maps in creative

Shotgun Techniques

The Edit-Shoot-Reset

The bread and butter of high-level Fortnite:

  1. Edit a wall/floor/cone (window, triangle, etc.)
  2. Shoot through the edit
  3. Reset the edit immediately
  4. Repeat

Speed is everything. Practice this combo until it’s muscle memory.

Right-Hand Peek Shots

  1. Position yourself to the right of a wall/build
  2. Quick-peek right, take the shot
  3. Return behind cover
  4. This exploits the third-person camera advantage

Jump Shots

  • Jump and shoot at the peak of your jump
  • Gives you a height angle advantage
  • Don’t jump-spam (accuracy penalty after multiple jumps)
  • Best combined with a pump shotgun

Crouch Peek Shots

  1. Stand behind a ramp or half-wall
  2. Uncrouch to peek
  3. Shoot immediately
  4. Crouch back down
  5. Faster and harder to counter than side-peeking

Piece Control Combos

Box Fight Domination

When your opponent is in a box:

The Classic:

  1. Take their wall (hold replace)
  2. Edit a window
  3. Pump shot to the face
  4. Reset wall

The Floor Play:

  1. Get above their box
  2. Edit the floor (top corner)
  3. Shoot down through the edit
  4. Reset and repeat

The Cone Trap:

  1. Get into their box
  2. Place a cone over them
  3. Edit the cone (one tile)
  4. Free shot while they’re trapped

When You’re Being Boxed Up

If someone takes your wall:

  1. Pre-edit or place a ramp inside your box
  2. Edit out the back
  3. Counter-box them from a new angle
  4. Or simply disengage and reposition

Drill 3: Flick Shot Training (5 min)

  • Skaavok Aim Trainer: 8022-6842-4965

Drill 4: Free Build + Shotgun (5 min)

  • Free build, then quickly switch to shotgun
  • Practice shooting targets between builds
  • Goal: Smooth build-to-shoot transitions

Common Shotgun Mistakes

1. Shooting Too Early

  • Wait the extra 0.1 seconds to aim properly
  • A headshot does 2-3x more damage than a body shot
  • One good shot beats three bad ones

2. Over-Peeking

  • Only expose yourself for the minimum time needed
  • Shoot and immediately return to cover
  • Don’t try to get a second shot if you’re exposed

3. Jumping Into Fights

  • Jumping makes shotgun aim harder
  • Stay grounded unless you need a height angle
  • Crouch-strafing is more effective than jumping

4. Not Resetting Edits

  • Always reset after an edit-shoot play
  • An open edit is a vulnerability
  • Make reset a reflex, not a decision

5. Wrong Shotgun for the Situation

  • Don’t use pump in spray battles (you’ll get out-DPSed)
  • Don’t use auto shotgun for edit plays (not enough burst)
  • Adapt your shotgun choice to your strategy

Damage Optimization

Headshot Multipliers

  • Pump: 1.75x headshot multiplier
  • Auto: 1.5x headshot multiplier
  • Lever: 1.6x headshot multiplier

Pellet Spread

  • Shotguns fire multiple pellets per shot
  • All pellets need to hit for maximum damage
  • Being closer = more pellets hit = more damage
  • Aim for center mass if you can’t reliably hit head

Optimal Range

  • Maximum effective range: ~2 tiles (about 5 meters)
  • Optimal range: 1 tile or less
  • Beyond max range, switch to SMG or AR
