Fortnite Sniper Guide: Land Every Long-Range Shot

Snipers are the most satisfying weapons in Fortnite. A well-placed headshot can eliminate a fully shielded opponent instantly. But sniping is also one of the hardest skills to master due to bullet travel time and drop.

Understanding Sniper Mechanics

Bullet Travel Time

Unlike ARs and shotguns, sniper bullets are projectiles - they take time to reach the target:

  • Bullets travel at approximately 300 meters per second
  • At 100m range, the bullet takes ~0.33 seconds to arrive
  • At 200m range, ~0.66 seconds
  • Players can move significantly in that time

Bullet Drop

Sniper bullets are affected by gravity:

  • Short range (under 75m): Minimal drop, aim at the target
  • Medium range (75-150m): Aim slightly above the head
  • Long range (150-250m): Aim 1-2 character heights above
  • Extreme range (250m+): Aim 3+ character heights above

Damage Values

Bolt-Action Sniper:

  • Body: 116 damage
  • Headshot: 198+ damage (one-shot with no overshield)

Heavy Sniper:

  • Body: 132 damage
  • Headshot: 198+ damage
  • Bonus: Destroys builds in one hit

Hunting Rifle:

  • Body: 90-100 damage
  • Headshot: 180+ damage
  • Faster fire rate, less zoom

Leading Targets

The most important sniping skill is leading - aiming ahead of a moving target.

How to Lead

  1. Estimate distance: Use the scope markings
  2. Estimate target speed: Running, sprinting, or sliding?
  3. Aim ahead: Place crosshair where target WILL BE when bullet arrives
  4. Fire and observe: Watch where the bullet lands to adjust

Lead Distance Reference

For a target sprinting at full speed:

  • 50m: 0.5 character widths ahead
  • 100m: 1 character width ahead
  • 150m: 1.5 character widths ahead
  • 200m: 2+ character widths ahead

Predicting Movement

  • Straight-line runners: Easiest to snipe, lead consistently
  • Players in fights: Erratic, wait for them to stop
  • Looting players: Often stand still - free shots
  • Storm runners: Predictable path toward safe zone

Positioning

High Ground Advantage

Sniping from above gives:

  • Better angle (more of the enemy is visible)
  • Reduced bullet drop (gravity works with you)
  • Harder for them to spot you
  • Easier headshots (head is the closest body part from above)

Best Sniping Positions

  • Mountain tops with natural cover
  • Top floors of buildings with window views
  • Behind ridgelines where you can peek and hide
  • Tower builds (3-4 stories) in endgame

Things to Avoid

  • Skyline silhouettes: Don’t stand on top of hills against the sky
  • Glass buildings: Easy to spot the scope glint
  • Open fields: No cover if someone pushes you
  • Same spot twice: Relocate after taking shots

Quickscoping

What is Quickscoping?

Scoping in, firing, and immediately unscoping - all in under 1 second.

How to Quickscope

  1. Spot your target unscoped
  2. Aim near their head/body
  3. Quick-scope (ADS) to refine aim
  4. Fire the instant your crosshair is on target
  5. Unscope and move/build immediately

When to Quickscope

  • Mid-range fights (50-100m) where full scoping is too slow
  • Against rushing enemies who are closing distance
  • Peeking shots from behind builds
  • Third-party shots during ongoing fights

Advanced Sniping Techniques

No-Scope

At very close range (under 10m), hip-fire the sniper:

  • Only as a last resort
  • Jump + no-scope for unpredictability
  • Surprisingly effective with heavy sniper

Double Snipe

Carry two snipers and switch between shots:

  1. Fire first sniper
  2. Immediately switch to second
  3. Fire again
  4. Faster than waiting for bolt action

Bait Shots

  1. Fire a missed shot intentionally nearby
  2. Enemy thinks you missed and continues looting/fighting
  3. Second shot is the real one (they won’t dodge)

Storm Sniping

Position yourself at the storm edge:

  • Players running from storm move predictably
  • They’re focused on getting to zone, not checking for snipers
  • Easy leading since they run in straight lines
  • Morally questionable but effective

Sniper Training

Practice Map: Sniper Aim Training

  • Sniper One Shot: 7488-0498-4743
  • Moving Target Range: 5. Set custom targets at 50m, 100m, 150m, 200m
  • Realistic Sniper Training: 6087-6679-3862

Training Routine (15 min)

  1. Static targets (5 min): Practice bullet drop at various ranges
  2. Moving targets (5 min): Practice leading at different speeds
  3. Quickscope drills (3 min): Close-range snap aiming
  4. Real match practice (2 min): Drop with a sniper and commit to it

When NOT to Snipe

  • Close range (under 30m): Switch to shotgun
  • Multiple enemies pushing: You can’t fight a squad with a sniper
  • Inside buildings: Too little room to scope
  • When you have no cover: You’re an easy target while scoped
  • Endgame circles: Usually too chaotic for precise sniping
